First Week

I’ve spent a week so far at the church I’m working at (plus the few days at the orientation).  The more time I spend with the youth group, the more God shows me pieces of His heart for them.

Even though a lot of the kids go to Christian schools in Savannah, I’m praying to see them grow in their knowledge of the Lord.  I think for a lot of them, the problem isn’t a lack of intellectual knowledge.  I think a bigger problem is that they see Christianity (and maybe even Christ at times) as boring.  It’s just something you sit in a pew on Sundays and Wednesdays for.  And for some, in classrooms.  It isn’t something that necessarily changes your life or calls you to action now.  If it calls you to act, that happens when you're older and have it together.  I think that’s a problem that a lot of my generation and those younger than me have.  And I know it can be hard at times to view the Bible as the living Word of God instead of just a textbook when you’ve gone to a Christian school for so long (some of them, they’ve gone their whole lives).  I know there are times at OBU when others and I students have or will feel that way after a long semester of class.  But it’s so important to study the Word outside of classes.  It's the main way we have to get to know our Savior.  How can we worship what we do not know?  It isn’t just a textbook, you know?  I think that maybe that’s what it’s been reduced to.

I’m praying that God will give these students a passion, hunger, and love for His Word.  I’m asking Him to fill their hearts with love for Him, who He is, and what He’s done for them.  I’m praying that while He has me here, He’ll use me as an example to these kids.  Even though I most definitely do not get it right even the majority of the time, He has brought me down some paths that haven’t been easy and He’s taught me a lot.  Hopefully He’ll give me time to teach some of those lessons to these students without them having to learn them the hard way.

Just a quick recap of what I've been doing:

Working in the office

Hanging with the youth group

Burning myself while making cookies (I can't seem to cook without injuring myself....maybe one day I'll master it)

Riding go-karts (the youth group went last weekend.  These boys are out for blood...I have a bruise and maybe a mild case of whiplash)

The sumer is off to a great start! I can't wait to see what else God has in store! :)
